## Shibori with Natural Indigo Shibori is the Japanese art of shaped-resist dyeing, dating back over 1,000 years. ### Preparing the Indigo Vat Natural indigo is insoluble in water. You need a reduction vat: - Dissolve indigo in hot water - Add reducing agent (thiourea dioxide or fructose) - Add soda ash to raise pH - Wait for the vat to "bloom" (yellow-green surface = ready) ### Technique 1: Itajime (Fold and Clamp) Fold fabric into precise squares or triangles. Clamp between acrylic or wood shapes. Dip and the resist creates geometric patterns. ### Technique 2: Kumo (Pleat and Bind) Gather fabric at specific points and bind tightly with thread. Creates spiderweb-like radial patterns. ### Technique 3: Arashi (Pole Wrapping) Wrap fabric diagonally around a PVC pipe. Push fabric together to compress. Creates dramatic diagonal stripe patterns. ### Dipping - Submerge prepared fabric for 3-5 minutes - Remove and let oxidize in air (watch it turn blue!) - Repeat dips for darker color - Rinse thoroughly when done
