## The Saddle Stitch Unlike machine stitching, the saddle stitch uses two needles simultaneously passing through each hole from opposite sides. If one thread breaks, the stitch line holds. ### Why Saddle Stitch Matters This is why luxury goods (Hermès, etc.) are hand-stitched. A machine stitch is a chain — break one link and the whole line unravels. A saddle stitch is independent — each stitch locks itself. ### Materials - Waxed linen thread (0.6mm) - Two harness needles - Pricking irons or diamond chisel - Stitching groover - Cork-backed ruler - Leather piece to practice on ### Step 1: Mark Your Line Use the groover to cut a shallow channel along your stitch line. This recesses the thread below the leather surface. ### Step 2: Punch Holes Use pricking irons to create evenly-spaced holes. Hit firmly and straight. ### Step 3: Thread Up Cut about 3.5x the stitch length of thread. Thread a needle on each end. ### Step 4: Stitch Push the right needle through the first hole, center the thread. Now push the left needle through the second hole from the back, and the right needle through from the front. Pull both tight. Repeat.
